A Plan for Change?

I have a plan.  It’s a tentative plan but it’s a plan.  First, I’m going to reread what I have written and hopefully pick out some good bits.  Then Im going to put the whole thing to one side and just write.  The piece I have is too short and I dont want to pad it out only to have to remove it all later.  Instead, I am going to re-write the whole thing.  This way I will avoid trying to shoehorn passages into my writing that just don’t fit.

I wrote my first draft without any editing.  I just threw it out on the page and, boy, does it show.  I’ve not figured out if I will edit as I go this time but I may review what I have written in the last session and edit that before going on to the next section.  I have to write, rewrite, edit and polish around caring for my six month old child so my reviewing my latest work I think I may well maintain a rhythm in my writing.  I’m used to being able to write as and when I want and that just isn’t the case here so I need to adapt my working practices to suit my new situation.

Change is good though and Im using this change to spur on my quest for submission.  Now that might well be my plan. 🙂

  1. Yay!

I actually find that I have to just write and not really think about it. If I stop to edit on the way, then I lose my flow of thought and nothing gets written. But we all know I’m just weird like that 😛

  3. I set daily and weely writing goals and that helps me slog ahead, without editing until I’m all done. But sometimes it helps get you into the frame of mind to write if you reread what you’ve just written first before starting on the new material. Whatever works for you, but goal setting will spur things forward. A word of caution: Don’t go on the Internet until the writing quota is done.

    • Yes, the internet is a bit of a draw. I had to turn off my mobile phone, twitter and facebook in order to be able to work today. I will be keeping a notebook next to me of things to be researched so that I dont have the temptation to go online to ‘quickly’ look things up. 🙂 The internet is a fabulous tool but its a wonderful way to procrastinate.

  4. I admire anyone who can write/edit productively and look after a baby! Best of luck with your rewrite! 🙂

  5. I tend to edit on the way. It means I spend half the next day’s writing time reviewing and editing the previous day’s work, but for me, that’s the way I like it. Then, when I finally finish, I throw it to one side for maybe a month or two so that I can come back to it with fresh eyes. Works for me, but we’re all different. Keep going, and good luck!

    • Thanks for stopping by Janice. Editing is a very personal thing I think. We search the internet for ‘how to’s on editing but I think its not that easy. We think about our writing style and voice but I am beginning to think that our editing style and voice is as equally individual.
